Just a few quick update notes and then I’ll let you be on your way! I have finally received my Notion Ink Adam I do like it just as much as I thought I would, especially after replacing the stock rom! I have already put up 3 posts in regards to my Adam, so be sure to check them out. It appears that all of my hardware is fully functional and without defects, although I have not yet tried a video recording. Everything looks perfect! (except the screen protector, which I screwed up when I put on my Adam! Pics are up on the gallery post)

Also, I’ve been messing around with my home wifi settings and noticed some things (some of these I already knew, but I’m posting them, as I have not previously, or stated something different previously). I have a Cisco e3000 dual band 802.11n router with four 1GB Lan ports, and a USB port that I can attach a USB stick or USB harddrive to and access from the internet via ftp (very awesome and super cool!), I have a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer thumb drive attached right now, it supports user creation, passwords, and even security groups!

  1. apparently my Cisco e3000 Router powers cycles the 5GHz frequency prior to powering on the 2.4GHz frequency
  2. sometimes when resetting my router, I have to turn off wireless networking on my Android devices, then turn it back on or they won’t see the network
  3. It appears that the amount of time between restarting my wireless on the router and when it becomes available to devices is equal to the Beacon interval multiplied by the DTIM interval.
  4. My HTC Evo 4G does NOT support 5GHz 802.11n, only 2.4GHz (does not even see the 5GHz network I have), apparently the HTC Evo networking chip (bcm4329), not only comes in two models, one with dual band 2.4GHz & 5GHz and one without, is the same one in the Nexus1, Droid Incredible, GTab, iPhone 3GS & 4, iPod Touch, and iPad1 (who knows what else it is in!), and is a SoC with 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz, BT 2.1, and FM transceiver, I wonder if anyone has gotten the iPhone4 to do FM yet?
  5. My Google Chrome OS cr-48 netbook does do 802.11n 5GHz.
  6. My Notion Ink Adam does not do 5GHz, it only does 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n
  7. As I’ve said, I’ve been messing with some of my network settings (specifically on my router) and I have found that a DTIM Interval setting of 6 on my 5GHz 802.11n settings works with my cr-48 Chrome OS netbook, but upping it to 7 causes intermittent connection issues. Changing the DTIM interval to 5 on the 2.4GHz b/g/n network works with my HTC Evo and Lenovo ThinkPad T410, but not the Notion Ink Adam which fails to connect to the network at all. The HTC Evo has sporatic issues connecting and maintaining that connection when the DTIM is set to 7, hopefully there is a hack out there that will let me enable the 5GHz wifi n (if possible) on the Evo, so I can switch it over to the 5GHz network and take advantage of the increased DTIM setting. On a side note, some research I did while working on this, here is a great document on understanding wifi network traffic, latency, roaming/multiple APs, and bandwidth overhead (actually a document on optimizing wifi for VOIP). This Cisco router’s documentation has some good descriptions of the wireless settings.

Ok, so I’ve learned a few things while I was typing this and made some more modifications, previously I was using a 20,000 millisecond beacon time with those DTIM settings that is why I was having connectivity issues, I have tried to figure out the maximum time between DTIM packets and maintain a steady signal between all of my devices (to decrease sleep mode battery drain when wifi is active) as part of my experiments to improve my Notion Ink Adam battery life (currently between 8 and 12 hours of normal+ use or 20-36 hours of minimal use).

Below are the settings I’ve tried and the results I have received from each

    Beacon DTIM time result
    2000 6 12sec stable connection -4
    1500 7 10.5sec connection loop -5
    1500 10 15sec connection loop -5
    3000 10 30sec connection loop -5
    6000 10 1min mostly stable
    6100 10 1min 1sec connection loop -2
    6600 10 1min 6sec connection loop -3
    7000 10 1min 10sec connection loop -3
    9000 10 1min 30sec connection loop -1
    12000 10 2min connection loop -2
    24000 10 4min connection loop -1

1 – Evo stays connected for about 3 minutes before looping, Adam fails to maintain connection during obtaining IP Address
2 – Neither the Adam or the Evo can successfully make a connection
3 – Evo stays connected (tested 10 mins) without dropping, Adam fails to maintain connection during obtaining IP Address
4 – both my Evo and my Adam stay connected (tested 10 minutes) without dropping and I tested my Samsung moment with the same results
5 – the Evo stays connected and the Adam sometimes connects, then drops and won’t reconnect
*note – I have deleted many of the numbers I tested leaving only a few behind; however I left all of the entries marked with a “-1″ as it is note worthy to look into a pattern.
**double note – I killed a 100% battery charge on my Notion Ink Adam in about 4 hours testing this…

even set at 6000 and 10 I am still having connection issues with my Notion Ink Adam, it will connect, but only the “first time” after each power on. If it loses the signal for any reason it refuses to reconnect and continues the connection loop issue. So right now I am just going to leave things that way and see how it goes for a few days.

So, I’ve been messing around with my Adam for a while now and have noticed some things, many people have already noticed these things; however I am new to tablets and all my Android devices are still stock non-rooted (can’t afford to replace them if I screw it up!), as a List, currently in my home are an HTC Evo, and HTC Evo Shift, a Samsung Moment, and my Notion Ink Adam.

Things I have noticed, some are specific to the Adam, I think…

  1. most apps are written for really tiny resolution screens! I cannot even imagine it! The Adam is not super high res to begin with! The two worst apps I have seen so far are Gem Miner and Fruit Ninja! Makes me wonder if people realize that there are cell phones with greater than 900×500 resolution! (see the Meizu M9 which has a 3.5″ 640×960 display) These apps seem to be written for 320×240 pixel displays
  2. I believe my Notion Ink Adam had a faulty OS install
    • When trying to switch to the Pixel Qi mode, it does switch, but also locks the screen and immediately goes to sleep… If I figure out that I am doing it wrong, you may see me demonstrating the correct way on YouTube in the near future, but right now the only way I know how is to quickly press and release the power button and the display goes B&W and then locks and then shuts off, in about 2.5 seconds. I tried getting the Pixel Qi switch app, but I couldn’t figure out how to use it before I nuked the stock Rom! I did take my Adam out in the sun and I was able to see it just the same (very sunny and direct on the screen) as when I was standing in side just seconds before (yes it was still in color when outside), so the auto-brightness must help a lot! Ok, I am a retard, apparently the PQi change button is a long press on the search button (go figure! I swear Rohan did it with a touch to the power switch in the videos), it works great, cannot believe I was standing in direct bright sunlight without using the PQi and could see the screen fine! I’ll have to test that again…
    • I was not able to utilize any widgets, or airplane mode
    • Eden Leaves would close themselves if I entered a full screen app and then exited that app by pressing the home key, all the leaves would close, after installing another app that could work as a home screen (Android Mate), anytime I pressed the home key and selected the Eden home screen, all Leaves would be closed.
    • I’ve installed the Clockwork Mod, quick, easy, painless. it was the first time I have messed with an Android device in any way other than installing apps! I made a backup of my installation and that was about it! About 36 hours later I nuked my data and cache off the device, then formatted my internal SD, as it still had stuff on it, and restored from the restore partition.
    • I then went to install EdenX, and when I went to shutdown I noticed I had an option to use airplane mode! maybe that would have helped with the cell standby eating >73% of my battery… who knows, didn’t stick around long enough to figure it out. I did try to initiate a change to the Pixel Qi display, but no dice (this was before I figured out how to do it right).
  3. well, Now I am waiting on EdenX to install, not looking good… I verified that Clockwork was gone, copied the EdenX files to the internal SD, and have been sitting staring at the little 3D’ish android guy for at least 10 minutes if not 25, I think it only took 3 – 5 minutes to restore stock… ok I’ve waited an hour, still the same. Pressing home took me back to the menu where it said failed to mount sd, ok, so I am a dumbass, I have only used the Clockwork mod when in recovery mode before, so I did not realize I needed to use the power button to start the process… well actually I forgot, I did read that part of the instructions. Again it took about 3.5 minutes and there was an image of a box with an arrow coming out of it. I’ll try and get a pick next time.
  4. The pretty white border around the Adam (shown also in red online, but not available) appears to be a sticker, thinner than electrical tape. Or it has a clear “sticker” over it, as there appears to be a bubble on the corners (maybe it is a shipping protection cover, but I am not willing to try and remove it!)
  5. Good news, my Adam camera does “lock” there is a definitive click when it reaches the full front or rear position and it takes a minor amount of effort to move it again.
  6. There is a “back” button on the right hand side of the device (in landscape mode), not really sure why, but I think it may come in handy once I get the thing setup the way I want it!
  7. The screen protector makes only a small difference in the glare, I don’t really think it is matte, not at all what was shown by Rohan on the notionink.wordpress.com blog. Oh and I recommend installing it sideways (landscape instead of portrait top down), as it will be easier to see if you are putting it on crooked! $10 to get another, just in case. ****update – Tactus has lowered their price to just $5 to get a replacement protector (although, since it is on Amazon.com shipping is $6.75)
  8. I am loving EdenX, although it kept somethings from the Stock Rom I was not crazy about (some of the preinstalled apps, the crappy notification bar…), it runs much better, more responsive to touch, faster, allows widgets, multiple home screens, a real app launcher, and is much closer to what I was expecting out of the Box. I was even able to install my previously purchased Android Apps from the Android market, yes EdenX provides the Android market. Not sure when I’ll get around to trying another Rom, but for now, I am happy with EdenX! Only change I need to make is to disable the Cell Standby, that sucker is eating up >73% of my battery…

ok so to start, Appcelerator Titanium is still not working on either x64 or 32-bit Kubuntu 10.04.  I even found a video on YouTube on setting it up for Ubuntu 9.10 that had about 4 or 6 steps and took almost zero time, in fact he did it in an edited 10 minute video and did not install and dependencies or compilers… (gcc, gcc++, python, or ruby) on a clean OS install.  I am still not able to get it running.  I have a new weird error I have not been able to find helpful info on at this point.  will update this post early next week, I have a busy weekend ahead of me)

Final Fantasy XIII – still playing, found some things I am happy about, still not attached to my characters, although I care enough about my accessories that I want to complain that you don’t get them back when your party gets changed (which happens a lot).  I spent all my gil upgrading 1 weapon for each and 3 accessories, and I don’t always get a chance to un-equip the accessories before there is a party swap.  Also found a new thing that pisses me off!! THEY MADE UP WORDS TO THE CHOCOBO SONG!!! I can’t believe they stooped so low! (yes I know there was a pun in that statement)

Good news though, no 999hp limit (I know not the first FF to do so), damage is not capped at 9999 nor 99,999 (I believe, as the only not secret achievement in the game is do more than 100k damage in a single attack).  I am now in chapter 8 and have noticed a significant ramping up of CP rewards, and CP cost for new abilities.  I spent 4 hours at the level 7 sweet spot, Hope’s house, just run around inside and the soldiers respawn when you get halfway to the opposite side.  I made 125k gil from celling incentive chips (2.5k each) and got 60 phoenix downs and 25k CP.  not too bad a stash, but it was not enough… I could not buy any of the better upgrade components yet, so could only upgrade 1 item and 1 weapon (got Lightning’s starter sword to level 12, or maybe it was 11) and when I got to chapter 8 I was not able to max out anyone’s new CP skills. better yet! after I finished a relatively short and easy section wit h Sazh and Vanille (whom I always call vanilla) I had 33k CP available to upgrade the other team!!  which means that easy part at Nautillus which took about 45 minutes +/- gave me almost as much CP as 4 hours in Hope’s house… if I had known that, I would have stuck around Nautillus a bit more.

Right, on to my PC state of affairs… again, I have been using KUbuntu 10.04 for a week or two now, and have an installation post to make still, have it written on little scraps of paper that I need to type up, all seems good, Fedora 13 should be out tuesday, I have prepared my system for a clean install of that on a separate HDD.  Should get that done Wed, so there should be a post about that coming Saturday (maybe friday, I am going to try and post everything in the order it has been happening, so nothing gets left behind.  Also look out for a post on Sprint’s HTV Evo 4G sooner or later (might wait till I pick mine up on June 4th!!! although I will be out of town that weekend to watch a dance recital, 4 yr old and a 9yr old).  hopefully I will be posting my 32-bit Appcelerator install guide tonight if I can figure out this new error.  I want to get started on a couple system apps/widgets for my Evo before I get it.

Seems to be handling both the Java and the Flash with no problems, just a bit of formatting issues, as I cannot get it to change the default 800×600 resolution. Tried to watch a video on Hulu earlier too, took several minutes to load the starting commercial and then the page went non-responsive, check out the screen shots below…

right looks like the flash is not happening… the pages were actually locked up and non-functioning. so no hulu, no youtube, and no file uploads for my blog… will give it a shot again later. But for now, I’m finishing this post via Win7.  Hulu did load and I was able to select a video clip to play, and then everything went down hill… will try again later…

I did notice a couple more things, first you have to log into Chromium using your google account, but everytime you go to a google website, you have to log in with your google account… second, besides not being able to change you screen resolution, I can’t change the screen saver time out either, so basically there are no system wide configuration options yet (ie. windows control panel).

On a good note, the web browser is faster in the virtual machine than IE is in Win7…
