Hex defense, a bit retro with the Graphics (just a step above PewPew), but amazingly fun Defense game, with lots of maps that have slows, speed ups, health minus and health plus spaces (all in Hex) for the enemy units to walk on, and you to deal with! When I first got the game every level was limited to 20 waves, the game would install but never load on my Notion Ink Adam, while working perfectly on my HTC Evo. A couple of updates later (there have been at least 4 since I got the game some time in May/early June) I tested it on my Adam again, and it launched and runs perfectly. some of the updates added Achievements, removed the wave limit on the maps (at least I have not gotten far enough to find a cap on any of them), added some new levels and a few other tweaks. However the graphics do not scale well to the 10.1″ screen on my Adam, a bit disappointing considering what little there is to them. Different enemy units are weak/strong against different tower types too. There is a fast forward button too, and you can make the next wave start sooner by taping the Hex they originate from.

A couple of things I would like to see in future versions:

  1. More detailed upgrades – currently you don’t know what your towers can do, or what they receive when upgraded.
  2. Information about which units are weaker or stronger against certain towers.
  3. Improved graphics – it looks fantastic on my Evo, then when played on the Adam it looks like I’ve dropped into 8bit Nintendo on a 65″ TV world.
  4. Sometimes when I try to select a Hex it picks the wrong one (ok, so most of the time), it seems like I have to touch slightly below the one I want, which is actually a good thing, if you know in advance, but since no other game does this, it is hard to remember, it also makes it hard to select the Hexs on the bottom row (especially on my Adam where they are sometimes covered by the buy/upgrade options).
  5. A preview of the map before starting the game, since there are 20 levels it would be nice to see what they look like before starting them!
  6. A global high score board would be nice also, there are many options out there that you can just link your game to without having to create your own. Although none of them are integrated into any social system, it would be nice if Google+ allowed you to see high scores from people in your circles and made the API’s available to Devs… just thinking out loud here…

Something I really like about the game that no other tower defense game I have played will let you do: place a tower when an enemy is already in the square, once that unit passes through all remaining units have to go around the tower from then on. Also that there are so many levels! I don’t play this game as often as other games, but I know there is always a level to play that keeps me from ever being bored with the game.

Majesty is a great game based off the old Majesty PC series and enjoys benefits of both Majesty 1 and 2. I like that the first thing that comes up is an option to enable/disable sound. My wife hates the sound effects from video games and I ALWAYS have to turn the sound low enough she cannot hear it (not possible on my Adam), or off. So having this option so I can enjoy the sounds when I am alone is great. You get three save places, although unless you have multiple users of your device, this is unnecessary as far as I can tell there is no customization in the game that would cause one save to vary from another. The recent addition of achievements is great and I have had a good time collecting them. You can also upload your game progress to their server, and you get one level save, where you can get a level setup, then save it so you don;t have to start back at the beginning if you fail to get a gold completion rating ()necessary to get to the end of the game, very annoying to me, as it is quite hard to get a gold rating on all the levels). There has also been at least one added level via updates over the last 60 days. And several updates to the game UI and engine. Plays great on my Notion Ink Adam as well (in fact I have not played it at all on my HTC Evo). One major annoyance is a feature of the game, you do not have direct control over anything in the game, except where you spend you gold (building upgrades and hiring champions mostly), the characters in the game do what they want when they want and you have minor control by offering bribes and hoping they accept.

Baseball Superstars 2011 is the Android Baseball game for players who want to customize how they play, you can play season by season as a single batter or pitcher, play only the cleanup batter, no matter who it is, only the closing or starting pitcher, play everyone! let the computer handle base running, pick your favorite team members and only play them, how ever you want to set it up, you can do it in Baseball Stars 2011.

One of the games best settings is a speed setting that allows you to speed up or slow down the game, having a hard time hitting 100mph fastballs? slow it down, feel like the game is taking too long, or have less time to play? speed things up! The Graphics are cartoony, but good (the new version Baseball Superstars II has Anime graphics, but seems to only be on iOS right now), It looks good on a 10.1″ Notion Ink Adam tablet display as well as my 4.3″ HTC Evo screen.

I do have a few issues, but none prevent me from playing the game, and what game has ever been absolutely perfect for every person? I play mostly in the “My League” mode, which allows you to create a batter or pitcher and follow their career.

  1. You can hit a pop fly to the batter’s box – something which the catcher will never miss, until your batting score gets over 920.
  2. The fielders all play like all stars when your batting score is low – 40′ long dives to catch a line drive, never dropping a catch…
  3. I’ve noticed that the opposing teams actually get worse the more you play – the better your character’s skills the worse your opponents play against you.
  4. Many games seem rigged – depending on how well you play, the computer will do everything it can to make the team it wants win, if you are batting, all of your teammates will never score, unless you hit the hit that brings them home, or the computer will keep the game close (like 2-2) but in the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning will score 5-10 runs! after you hit a 2 or 3 run homer to take the lead! even if you are ranked #1 and playing the 10th place team. The only real way to control every game is to be the pitcher and pitch the whole game without a sub (in My League, in season play, just play all the pitchers!).
  5. It is very easy (when you first install the game) to make a new batter and do the HR mode and score Gpoints until you’re swimming in them, and then upgrade your player to max stats before even playing their first game. (between 60k and 70k Gpoints should do it).
  6. If you swing before the pitcher releases the ball (the swing window starts right before the ball is let loose), you cannot swing again, you are stuck in the swing position until the ump calls it a strike.
  7. Unless you have perfect timing and hit a homerun, it seems to be impossible to hit pitches in the corners of the strike zone, or any pitch outside the strike zone, even if you move in the batters box so you are closer (outside pitches)/farther (inside pitches) from the pitch.
  8. Also the game does not take into account when you have maxed a stat out and still awards you points that just disappear. (fame included, once you hit 999 fame, you’ll get another 999 fame before long but the counter never goes over 999…).
  9. You are the team, in every mode. Don’t expect your team to play good, ever, unless you are controlling them. I tried playing an entire season as just the batters, all of the batters, and finished in 4th for the season and lost in the second round of the finals (top 4 teams play first to 4 wins moves on to the next team, so 4th place would have to beat 3, 2, and 1st place to win all of it (12 wins!)). Again this goes back to fixed games, I lost one game while playing all the batters in Season mode, made me really upset, I was up 8 – 0 in the 4th inning, the computer got 20 runs between the 5th inning and the 8th inning, I actually caught up and took the lead at 24-23 in the 9th (I scored a few in the 4th-8th too, not all of those were in the 9th!), then they still beat me 28-24 in the bottom of the 9th, this was one of those times where my team was more than 4 positions above in the rankings.
  10. Even with a 900+ running skill, I still cannot steal home after a sacrifice fly to the wall, I cannot beat a bunt to first most times (10-15% success rate on the bunt), and I cannot steal 2nd base more than once every 15-20 attempts.
  11. The coach keeps asking me to bunt when I hit 50 homers per season and have an 800+ batting average and bat in the cleanup position (even in the 9th inning when we are losing by one and the runner is on first with 1 or 0 outs).
  12. All of the walls are the exact same distance (324′ will get you a homer anywhere in the park and all teams play in the same stadium).
  13. If you hit the foul pole you can get a homer, but the distance the ball traveled is shorter the higher up you hit the pole… The shortest homer I’ve gotten was 276′ at the top of the pole and 304 at the bottom of the pole…
  14. All of the computer controlled players know if the ball will be caught for an out, none of the base runners move, not even to go halfway. So later in the game when your stats are really high, the fielders may start to drop the ball, then throw to the base where the runner never tried to go to and get him out instead of you.
  15. Not a lot of information in game, I mean it tells you how to hit a ball, and how to pitch a ball, but not a lot else on how the unique Baseball Stars system works. So I went to the Dev website for more info, nothing there. So I tried to join their forums and post a question, there is NO SIGN UP/REGISTRATION LINK!
  16. It would have be nice to see you “total” stats, ie. battering average cumulative over all your seasons, total HR’s and so on, but it does not seem to be an option in game.
  17. Also, something I did (a skill I earned maybe) gave me the ability to increase my defense score by tapping up while batting!?!? I still cannot find any info on exactly what those skill mods do…
  18. Last thing! The on screen D-pad is at least twice the size it needs to be, taking up almost half the screen. Not too annoying on a phone, but on a Tablet it can make it awkward to play to game.

All in all, I have spent a good 100 hours playing this game and I still suck, although I’ve learned how to win, a lot. My batter consistently gets a .800+ batting average, and my pitcher can pitch perfect games about 1 out of every 3 times and the other games only allow 1 or 2 hits the entire game. I still enjoy playing, I have achieved 4 girlfriends for 1 batter, that was fun, but nothing happens after you “win” the girls… you cannot even go see them again.

Let me start off by saying, “What a Mess!” About 2.5 weeks ago (probably 3 by the time I post this!) I bought an HP Deskjet 2050 printer at Walmart, it was cheap, had a flatbed scanner, came with “full” ink cartridges, and only a USB connection option. It was $49.00, $20 more than the printer that looked identical, but was not a flatbed scanner. I thought that HP of all companies would have linux support, even for newer model printers, oh there is support for it… If you can find it. (I’ll be putting up a separate post with plenty of links and re-written documentation for installing this and other HP printers in Ubuntu in the next week or two, kinda busy this weekend, so doubt it will get done before next week)

First thing I did was to go to HP’s website and download a driver, I wasn’t even going to fool with the included CD (actually not sure it even had one). I found it within a minute or two, all seemed good. Installed the driver and plugged the printer in, everything went fine. I believe I even printed something that day just clicked print and it spit right out! Well, next to happen was my wife is using my ChromeOS CR-48 netbook and wanted to print something, so I went to look into setting up Google Cloud Print. I figured, yeah cloud print, that should work… Google has two operating systems in their pockets and both are linux based, piece of cake to use cloud print with linux, right? wrong…

Google Cloud Print requires a Windows computer running the beta Google Chrome browser (or a Mac, but why would you want to use a Mac?) (an fyi, the Linux Chrome Browser only comes in Beta!), a bit confused and disappointed (happens a lot with Google these days), I thought, oh well, good thing I have 5 or 6 Windows Virtual Machines setup already! I popped onto a Win7 VM and setup Google Cloud Print and told my wife “Good to Go!” only took me 30-45 minutes to figure all that out and set it up (I forgot to share it with her gmail ID the first go round!).

Success! it printed!
I love first try attempts that work out great!

So next I had to fill out some paperwork for work and email it back, so I printed the pages that needed signing and filled them out, then tried scan them back in… the scanner would not scan (using simple scan) unless I unplugged the USB cable for 10 seconds or so, then plugged it back in… (more on that at the end of this post, I have a theory). Well after 3-5 pages of this over 1-2 hours, out of about 12 pages, popping the USB cable out stopped working. I wasn’t sure why it needed it in the first place, I had checked to make sure the printer was not attached to a VM at the time… So instead I tried setting it up to scan off the Win7 VM I was using for Cloud Printing (just a note, this was all happening maybe 4 days after the cloud print setup), the scanning application from HP worked fine until I was done. Weird though, again if I did not use the printer for an hour or two, or the VM was paused, or the screen saver came on, I had to unplug the USB cable again…

ok, so history done, up to my issue that started last night…

Actually the issue started on Saturday, but I was pre-occupied and didn’t really try too hard to get it resolved. My wife sent something to the printer from the netbook, I started up the VM for the Win7 Cloud Print, and it never printed. The first document just says “In Progress” and the date submitted was showing 3 days ago when I deleted it. I’ve powered off the Printer for 30+ minutes, I’ve rebooted my computer 4 times, leaving it powered off for about 8 hours once, popped the USB cable, nothing worked. I tried printing locally from Ubuntu and still nothing comes out, just says “Processing”. I did some digging online and found some “directions” for setting up the printer in linux, most of which was on HP’s website, and I never did any of it, including downloading the driver source files and doing a Build, Make, Install on them. So I started following the directions (did not build the driver, it seems to be installed and functioning, as Ubuntu can tell if it is plugged in or not and shows the correct device name), and found a huge list of dependencies that it says to install, I tried it and sure enough I did not have most of it installed on my system yet. About 78MB worth to be specific. I let it run, and noticed a new kernel was available, so I updated that while I was at it… 3 reboots later (not necessary, just kept trying to get things working) and I have no change in the current situation.

So, right now I have no working printer at all, not even scanning is working. It shows it is online, I have enabled it, shared it, allowed internet printing on it (none of which I did when I installed it, only did that after it stopped working).

Now, I’ve had some time to think about it, and I have been having USB issues with Ubuntu the entire time I’ve been running it. My USB webcam and Skype have fighting matches everytime I reboot my system, it never detects and adds the webcam as a valid hardware device, I have to manually configure the microphone each restart, and the video sometimes requires I unplug the webcam and then plug it back in and restart Skype. Other USB devices (I have a USB wireless headset and KB, external drives, my android phone), have all had issues that has required me to restart the computer or plug and unplug the device over and over several times.

This made me think I should run “lsusb -v” on my system to take a look at the devices that the system thinks I have. Well the command does nothing, it just hangs and never runs or finishes running, I have to kill the process AND the terminal window process to get it to stop. I missed this in the printer issue above, but I tried running the hp-setup app that came with the driver and it hangs on detecting the printer when I select USB as the connection type, as well.

So I have determined that the issue is with my Ubuntu installation and the USB service (this occurred to me actually right before I started typing this up). I have not yet started looking into the USB issue and will be doing so tonight. I’ll post a second post instead of updating this one with any results I find out, or if I nuke and reinstall… as a note if I do reinstall, it will not be Ubuntu 11. Also planning on typing up a how to properly install an HP printer on Ubuntu 10.10 x64 guide too.
