last updated July 11th 2011

I have made available here on my website a mirror for a significant number of Roms to install on the Adam, including the Stock images and updates. I just decided it might make sense to post their links on my website, since I am mirroring them here. clicking on the name of the mod will take you to the forum on tabletroms.com where the developer is posting updates and answering questions. Please click the links for installation instructions, support, and to check for newer versions, I cannot guarantee I have the newest updates, but I will try. I have not virus scanned any of these, I have not unpacked/repacked any of these, the only files I even renamed were ones with the default name “update.zip” as you cannot have 20 files called update.zip and expect your hair not to fall out! The only promise I can give is that I won’t take these files down unless the developers ask me to do so! Any changes I might make for my own use will never be posted on this page, I will make a separate post if I decide to ever do that, to avoid confusion.

Again, this is just a mirror location, not the official or original site for any of these Roms. Nor am I affiliated with any of the developers, besides being a poster on some of the same forums. Just trying to help preserve the history of these Roms, and provide an additional location to gain access to them.

First off I want to post this link to TabletRoms.com and their page for working on Honeycomb on the Notion Ink Adam. If anyone reading this has any Kernel development experience, they need just a bit of help and the Rom will be completely working for everyone! So go here to help out if you can.

Notion Ink Adam Stock Roms and Updates

These are the NI Roms that I have gotten from the NIH website (mostly the unbricking website, except the one that was linked to XDA, I think, or maybe that was the Adam Stock Apps… I get confused, a lot…). I have posted them for safe keeping in case other sources disappear, and to make they are available when/if I need them. For the Honeycomb Roms, I have started numbering them 1.0, 1.1… this is not any official numbering and I think I missed one, we will call that one 0.90 if I ever find it/decide to put it up here.

note, I renamed these files, because NI called all of them “update.zip” to install without clockwork mod (which I thin kmost have stopped using) you will need to rename the file to update.zip before you flash it.

Having an issue since I tried to flash from Beast v2.2 to Beast 2.2.1, I don’t think it is Caused by Beast, but I did not have any issue previously and I have been through a couple of roms now… as a note I am using Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my desktop and also have a laptop with U10.10 32-bit dual-booting into win7 x64, although I try to never boot into windows. I have a microSD to SD converter that I plug into a SD to USB converter to copy files to the card.

  1. I copied the file to my 32GB MicroSD
  2. restarted into recovery mode
  3. wiped the cache and data
  4. restarted again (had to boot into v2.2 and renamed it to update.zip, as I have not reinstalled Clockwork since I left EdenX)
  5. restarted into recovery mode again
  6. wiped the cache and data
  7. selected update from external SD
  8. after the update it hung on the new Android logo (I let it sit for 73 minutes before giving up)
  9. restarted into recovery mode again
  10. wiped the cache and data again
  11. restarted the Adam again
  12. same result

I tried redownloading the .zip file and trying again

  1. renamed the file first this time
  2. copied it to my 32GB Micro SD
  3. this time I added some .apk files to the apps folder to try and save some time reinstalling things
  4. restarted into recovery mode again
  5. wiped the cache and data again
  6. selected update from external SD
  7. update failed update.zip (BAD)
  8. took the Micros SD out again
  9. and put it in my desktop
  10. I tried to open the .zip file and it failed to open, “Error: /media/disk/update.zip: Can not open file as archive”

rinse and repeat four times, same issue every time. Always the same issue if I try to reboot too, with it hanging on the Android logo.

Just to test if it was my Ubuntu install corrupting the file transfer I tried it from the laptop in Windows, same results, exactly.

I’ve tested the .zip both before and after putting it in the Adam, every time the same, doesn’t matter if I put the card in my desktop, laptop with either OS. It is always good before I put it in the Adam (yes I tested by copying it on one computer and opening it on the other before putting it in the Adam), and Always bad after I take it out of my Adam.

Now, I still have the Beast v2.2 update.zip on the internal SD; however when I flash to it, the Adam reboots and then gets stuck on the Android logo (from the new v2.2.1 rom) as such is obviously still Beast v2.2.1 even after what appeared to be a successful flash.

**** update ****
two other notes,

  1. I do have and have tried, a 2GB microSD card. same results.
  2. I called the file update.zip.zip (by accident on the Win7 machine, hidden known file types) one time and the Adam said it could not find the file, then when I put it in my laptop again (in Win7) and tried to open the file to make sure it was still good, Windows prompted me to “insert the last disk of the Multi-Volume set” Again, this was on a zip file that was working when I took it out of the laptop, was not named update.zip and it still had the issue when I took it out of my Adam.

Because of #2 here in the update section, I tested this by placing other .zip files in the root of the micro SD, and all .zip files are corrupted after I put the card in my Adam.

****update 2****
I downloaded the Beastv2.2.1 Rom from my own mirror location, saved it to my 2GB MicroSD and put it in the Adam. Flashed perfectly and then said “BYE” and restarted, I ran out to return a red box movie right as it flashed “BYE” and when I came back it was still sitting on the “ANDROID” logo, so no go there. The Good news is that the update.zip file was not corrupted when I stuck it back in the Win7 machine. not sure what changed, but it was the first time the zip file came back ok. So I just tried powering the Adam back on normal. Sat on the ANDROID screen for 10 minutes before I gave up. Went back in and wiped the Data and Cache and rebooted again, my reward for diligence was 10 more minutes on the ANDROID logo. I do want to note at this time that all times it sat on the Android logo, from the first flashing, the logo WAS animated, it was not hung, more like the Adam was waiting on something. Also I want to note I have tried flashing clockwork on to try and see if it would help, but get the same results. I also tried rebooting without the MicroSD card inserted, no difference.

I’m going to try a different Rom and see if it makes any difference.

Well, I failed with Vegan Rom also…
I guess I need to setup ADB and do an unbrick
strange enough it always flashes the copied Beastv2.2 from the internal card with no issues, other than it still boots with the Gingerbread Android Logo and gets stuck on it forever…

**** Update 3 ****
Stranger things have happened, I plugged my Adam into the Laptop while Win7 was booted and the Adam was trying to boot into something, and it recognized it, added 4 devices to my computer, including one called “Harmony” which I had to use the unbricking USB Driver to recognize, it turned into Android Debug Device after that… It did mount the storage device; however, I was not able to open it, it just told me to insert a disk. I will start the unbricking process in the morning, as I am tired now and don’t want to make any stupid mistakes.

Ok, so it is a new day, and I have successfully restored my Adam to the way it was when they shipped it to me.
As an fyi, my Adam normally boots with a white background, black text “Notion Ink” additionally in the recovery options it says:

  • reboot system now
  • apply internal sdcard:update.zip
  • apply external sdcard:update.zip
  • wipe data/cache
  • wipe cache partition
  • calibrate touch screen

I flashed with the unbricking file windows_PQ, it took about 2 minutes to complete, and my adam now has a white text, black background notion ink logo, and #4 in the recovery window says “wipe data/factory reset” and is stuck on the adam boot screen loop.

I am right now doing both wipe steps and rebooting again…
And my adam started up without issue.

**** update ****
I have (just for fun) checked for updates on my adam, while it was in stock mode and there was one available. I downloaded it, and it is a 81.48 MB file, I have copied it to a usb stick, just in case, and will put the results here after it runs. (not sure what to expect, as I am currently on NIP20040211.

**** after update ****
I got my black Notion ink logo on a white background back, and am now on build NIP20140211, kernel 2.6.32, Android v2.2, it remembered my wifi security key… and now reports my adam is up to date and the update file has disappeared from my internal memory and my external SD…

Now for fun, I am going to try and install clockwork and then the exact same Beastv2.2.1 file that I tried the first time that got me in this mess…

hmmm… every time I copy (or rename) the clockwork.zip file to update.zip using sniffer, if turns into an empty folder named update, which disappears if I switch to another filesystem (ie go to USB or SD2, then back to the internal SD), but if I try to copy it again, it tells me the file already exists…

I am having the same issue if I try to rename and save the file from my desktop or laptop as I was having originally. So at this point I have a Notion Ink Adam that looks, runs and functions exactly like it did when I received it. Which in my mind is not at all. Now I am stuck, I cannot get my Adam to switch to another Rom, I cannot install anything via the update.zip method.

******************* UPDATE ******************
This issue has been resolved and within about 5 minutes I have found the problem and fixed it and I am preparing now to reflash my Adam to my modified Beast v2.2.1

The problem was caused by Beast v2.2.1 dropping LauncherPro as an installed home launcher, and only including VTL.Launcher (which I cannot stand, personally I think the weird floating shortcuts on the sides are abominable!) So, I’ve installed Launcher Pro from the market, and backed it up with Titanium Backup and copied the backups to my MicroSD, that I’ll transfer into my modified Beast Rom and attempt to install again.

******************* FINAL UPDATE!!! **********************
This issue was caused by a counterfeit Kingston 32GB micro SDHC class 6 – according to the Kingston website, the 32GB micro SDHC is not manufactured in class 6

I have been using the EdenX Rom continuously at this point and have tested many apps while using it, most with success, although not always perfectly. Also I have noticed a lot of apps do not launch well, I have to start them several times before anything happens, and apps that require internet access will not load at all, they flash on the screen very fast, maybe 300-600 milliseconds and then right back to the app launcher (learned this the hard way). Well, on with the list! It is a bit longer than the previous one, so I may not get this posted for a few days, then I will work on the Android apps page and try to get all of these apps listed there with download links to the Google Market and the Amazon market.

  • Akinator
    • This app is absolutely awesome, it can tell you who you are thinking of in an average of 20 questions. While there is room for improvement, as it frequently asks the same or similar question over again, and even goes so far to ask the opposite of a question you already answered in the affirmative. It did guessed me, my dog, characters from books I read when I was a kid (not the main character either), Felix the Cat (the first “person” ever on TV), Blu the bird from the new Angry Birds game: Rio, Cindy Brady, even The Great Pumpkin from Charlie Brown! and several others I tried, some times it had to guess more than once and some times I gave it wrong answers, but it always got them. There is even an option to edit the character’s name if not quite right, and add a picture if there is not one. the background image stretches to fit the screen, and the objects on screen are set to “top right” “top left” and “bottom” so it looks a bit funny, but works great (was a bit slow loading questions, but I think it is a problem I have been having with my wifi lately and not the app). It does play upside down in portrait
  • AndExplorer
    • my favorite file explorer for Android, although it does not show the sdcard2 and usb drive unless you go into the sdcard and then go up a level (I think the start screen is just bookmarks, you should be able to add them to that list, I just have not tried. No visible issues with formatting for the screen.
  • Anytime Pool
    • installed fine, will not load at all, pops up on the screen for about 800 milliseconds then goes away.
  • Bank of America App
    • installed in EdenX, so there is hope, but will not launch, I got the accept and decline option with a properly displayed user license, but after I clicked accept it went away and I could not get it to relaunch at all.
  • Armored Defense II
    • Looks good, plays great, just a bit skewed on the graphics and a touch low on the resolution for the graphics, but completely playable, one of the better tower defense games out there. Just make sure you are online when you first run it, it has to phone home and activate.
  • Backbreaker
    • no good here, it installed, it launched, some of the graphics did not load at all, it was completely unplayable, you could only see the outline of the player, and I had no idea where the opponents were. Had a good time playing this on my Evo it’s fun, easy to play, and something you can do with only a couple of minutes of spare time.
  • Baseball Superstars 2011
    • Plays great, absolutely no issues; however I haven’t played 2010, I had a great time playing the 2009 version, but I do not understand the changes they made in the 2011 edition, I cannot bat any longer, they changed the batting system and I cannot figure out to control the swing
  • Castle Crusade
    • will not launch, this is a shame, as I loved playing it on my HTC Evo
  • Castle Warriors
    • Fantastic Game, I played it straight through the campaign without getting up from my seat once. I just wish there was some elements of RPG in it, something that got better or at least carried over between levels. The lack of such greatly reduces replay value, maybe needs some upgraded graphics a touch, but it works without it
  • Dungeon Hunter HD
    • Another great Android game, and a special HD version, although it could use some increased polygons. But looks pretty darn good, no lag but I do have three issues, the character’s “light source” is not working very well me thinks, as it looks crappy and barely lights up the area the player character stands in. The second issue was the controls, it appears you have an 8 way virtual control stick; although I can almost never get the diagonals to work, am often stuck walking into walls while pushing the opposite way on the controller. And finally, the auto targeting is a bit funny, you can be surrounded by 4-6 enemies and your guy tries to go running off to attack another enemy that isn’t even on the screen yet, completely ignoring the other enemies.
  • Dungeon Defenders HD
    • All I can say is Wow, this has to be the best tower defense game conceived. I have not really run into any major game play or graphical issues, although I cannot beat the 4th wave in the first mission, “Deep well” even though my character is now level 4. I’m trying to figure out if there is a way to quit levels early and keep all that was earned on the levels completed. It even has a tablet “mode” you can turn on in the options menu, although it started with it turned on by default after installing on my Adam *** update *** significantly past that level, learned the hard way you can use multiple characters to set the traps between waves; however you are still stuck with just one character during the level. Thankfully any character can repair another’s traps.
  • Finger Physics
    • mostly works, it is playable, although there are some big black squares on screen, and the game does not stretch to fit, so you can see exactly how the graphics were designed. not made for larger display, but if you really like the game, it will work. personally not one of my favorites. it is one of those that you play once or twice and get rid of.
  • Grave Defense
    • installs and runs well, graphics are below sub-par and even look bad on my HTC Evo, the play field pans and actually goes farther than the actual map. This is not good, as once you go past the edge of the playing field the graphics mess up. I’d recommend skipping this one until they do a graphical overhaul. The devs do a great job adding new content and keeping this game alive, but if they don’t improve the graphics then I don’t see this app lasting into the new era of high res devices.
  • HiFiCorder
    • Like many of the Android Apps I have tested on my Adam, this one launches, allows me to accept the license agreement, then loads the app and disappears, attempting to re-launch it gives you a few thousand milliseconds to glimpse the app and then it is gone again. For all of these apps, I really do not think it is the app itself that causes this; however it is the Eden user interface or the chosen launcher that is causing it. I think part of the problem is that there seems to be no way to “hold down the home button” to get your last 6 or 8 apps to appear on screen so you can go back to them, this is one of the most used features of Android for me and will be the reason I leave EdenX. I’ll try to remember to check some of these apps on another rom to see if they work better (many of these are not apps I regularly use and only installed to test them on my Adam)
  • Homerun Battle 3D
    • looks good and plays fine, if you can figure out how to use the sideways accelerometers. I could get it to move up and down, but not side to side.
    • PewPew2
      • installs and runs great, I don’t really understand this game and cannot complete even the second level, I guess it is just not for me, looks good and works fine on my Adam though.
      • Platinum Sudoku
        • also installs and runs fine, but is forced to a very small display in portrait mode. It looks to me to be about 320×480, game play is great though all functions worked.
        • Prince of Persia
          • only seems to work in landscape mode 480×320 and runs about 5x normal speed, pretty amusing to play, but completely worthless as you cannot get past the first level or so without falling in a hole.
          • Sound Hound
            • No issues here, it even figured out that I was attempting to sing I love rock and roll, in falsetto, quietly… not quiet enough, as I did get a couple of funny comments after I finished.
            • X Construct
              • playable although the graphics are poor and the screen is zoomed in really close without the ability to zoom out any, also although the menu will rotate between portrait and landscape mode for the level select, nothing can be done in the game after you start a level. Additionally, the start button to send the train across your bridge is sometimes located on top of the battery button that is used to minimize the task bar.
              • Zenonia 2
                • no issues here, all looks and seems to work good, actually had a pretty good time playing it on my Adam.
              • Solitaire megapack
                • I did not even realize this was installed! I accidentally ran it while trying to swipe through my app list to try and get to something else at the time. It runs great though and is fully loaded with what seems to be close to 100 variations on solitaire. Good stuff here, will definitely keep this for boredom. Also has the ability to upload your character save to their servers, so you can download it again after a Rom flash, or even to another device. The only issue is that the download wipes any saves you currently have on that device, and it deletes the save from the device when you upload the saves.

well, it took me a week to get through all of these apps that I had not yet tested and to get this written up, but I’m done, so here it is! Next I’ll get to work on the app pages and get the links to the markets put up. then I’ll come back and add links in to this and my previous post.

I just received my Adam four days ago and finally got my pictures edited up for the web. So, here they are.

All things considered, everything seems to be working just fine and no shipping damages.
