Just wanted to put up a quick post here, I’ll fill in more as I have time, but….

*** Update ***
12-8-2012 – really early in the morning
So I only got to play for about 45 minutes, and made three characters and got one to level 4. A couple of notes, yes you can start playing before downloading is finished, BUT it does not download in the background while you play. When you get to a point that has not finished downloading it takes you to a screen with no details, just says “Downloading Update” and sits there. It took my system 30-50 minutes to finish downloading the next part. So I highly recommend waiting till it finishes before starting the game. Granted I have been having internet connection issues for the last 20 hours or so and even lost my internet a couple of times. I don’t think the initial download, even using peer to peer ever got over 400KB/s and I’ve hit 2MB/s on good days (sustained).

I love what I have seen, the game is exactly what one would expect after waiting this long to see it! I wish the beta had come out earlier so I would have had more time to play it, but I’ll do my best to play it a lot anyway! The cash based auction house has just gone live in the Beta system, but I have nothing to put in there, so I won’t be partaking anytime soon. I have been unsuccessful in taking screenshots even though the invite recommends it. Windows screenshots are coming out as blank grey screens. I am looking into another way to capture more screens.

ok so to start, Appcelerator Titanium is still not working on either x64 or 32-bit Kubuntu 10.04.  I even found a video on YouTube on setting it up for Ubuntu 9.10 that had about 4 or 6 steps and took almost zero time, in fact he did it in an edited 10 minute video and did not install and dependencies or compilers… (gcc, gcc++, python, or ruby) on a clean OS install.  I am still not able to get it running.  I have a new weird error I have not been able to find helpful info on at this point.  will update this post early next week, I have a busy weekend ahead of me)

Final Fantasy XIII – still playing, found some things I am happy about, still not attached to my characters, although I care enough about my accessories that I want to complain that you don’t get them back when your party gets changed (which happens a lot).  I spent all my gil upgrading 1 weapon for each and 3 accessories, and I don’t always get a chance to un-equip the accessories before there is a party swap.  Also found a new thing that pisses me off!! THEY MADE UP WORDS TO THE CHOCOBO SONG!!! I can’t believe they stooped so low! (yes I know there was a pun in that statement)

Good news though, no 999hp limit (I know not the first FF to do so), damage is not capped at 9999 nor 99,999 (I believe, as the only not secret achievement in the game is do more than 100k damage in a single attack).  I am now in chapter 8 and have noticed a significant ramping up of CP rewards, and CP cost for new abilities.  I spent 4 hours at the level 7 sweet spot, Hope’s house, just run around inside and the soldiers respawn when you get halfway to the opposite side.  I made 125k gil from celling incentive chips (2.5k each) and got 60 phoenix downs and 25k CP.  not too bad a stash, but it was not enough… I could not buy any of the better upgrade components yet, so could only upgrade 1 item and 1 weapon (got Lightning’s starter sword to level 12, or maybe it was 11) and when I got to chapter 8 I was not able to max out anyone’s new CP skills. better yet! after I finished a relatively short and easy section wit h Sazh and Vanille (whom I always call vanilla) I had 33k CP available to upgrade the other team!!  which means that easy part at Nautillus which took about 45 minutes +/- gave me almost as much CP as 4 hours in Hope’s house… if I had known that, I would have stuck around Nautillus a bit more.

Right, on to my PC state of affairs… again, I have been using KUbuntu 10.04 for a week or two now, and have an installation post to make still, have it written on little scraps of paper that I need to type up, all seems good, Fedora 13 should be out tuesday, I have prepared my system for a clean install of that on a separate HDD.  Should get that done Wed, so there should be a post about that coming Saturday (maybe friday, I am going to try and post everything in the order it has been happening, so nothing gets left behind.  Also look out for a post on Sprint’s HTV Evo 4G sooner or later (might wait till I pick mine up on June 4th!!! although I will be out of town that weekend to watch a dance recital, 4 yr old and a 9yr old).  hopefully I will be posting my 32-bit Appcelerator install guide tonight if I can figure out this new error.  I want to get started on a couple system apps/widgets for my Evo before I get it.

Slightly  different topic today, but I am tired of waiting for WordPress to complete version 3.0 so I can separate not tech blog posts onto another page without having multiple installations of WP…

******** quick top level edit… ********

I am sure as I continue on with the game I will post again, so do not consider this to be my definitive end of discussion post on this topic.

******** end edit… ********

so this game has been keeping me busy for a bit, but I have tons of complaints… I think I’ll get them out in the open first…

for starters, I cannot stand the new battle system, no character levels, say what? I understand the concept of class leveling, nothing new there, been around since the 70′s.  My issue is that you have to select the character advancements (ie +HP or +Magic or +STR…) but really get no choice, as you have to go in “order”  there is no customization (a key point that all “role playing games” strive to have for player enjoyment), you just follow the line they have given you.  I know that FF has always changed their battle system for each game version, but I wish they would either do new games that are follow-ups to the old, or spin-offs, or something.  Personal Opinion is that I prefer the FF VII and VIII battle systems to all others in the post-8-bit gaming world (not gonna go there with the pre-FF VII games, not enough data space in all the cloud for that discussion).  I think both need a little tweaking to be perfect (hence the reason I think they should keep the battle system for 2 or 3 games before changing it), but over all they were the most customizable and player variant character generation systems to date.

Let’s move on to summons at this point in the game (just starting chapter 6) I have Shiva and Odin, and have not used Shiva yet.  so I might have a slightly off opinion…  however… Square has continued with the summons entering combat for/with you, and all your party members up and split… I do not yet understand, get the summon battle mode yet, and feel the battles themselves are a bit to hectic and fast paced (ie except for the chapter 5 plant boos at the end where I died 7 times trying to get “lucky”  my longest battle to date has been 2 mins and 37 seconds, I average right around 25-35 seconds per battle, most of which is waiting for the ATB to fill), I do not even have enough time to try out most of the battle commands and abilities, as everything is over in 2-5 rounds, with the occasional battle running 7-10 rounds <—most of which is spent healing…. and even on 1080p with a 40″ tv I still cannot tell what those little icons are supposed to be (the directional ones)  I have no idea why they don’t just put a freaking arrow instead of a black blob telling me which way to push, and besides Odin seems to respond to button presses during gestalt (I sear that word is supposed to have an “h” in it) even if I do not use a direction…  on the chapter 5 plant boss, WITH STAGGER, Odin took about 10%-15% of the bosses health off, pretty wimpy for Odin… but I guess with all those rose petals around maybe he has gotten a little soft? changed his sexual appetite?  who knows…

now for auto-attack – well what can I say? if you don’t use it you will be killed before you can select your moves, if you do use it, you will get less than optimal results… so flip your coin and run with it, or learn to juggle between the two and use repeat often (nice that, worked better in USA FF III though…)

the largest variable part of the game is in weapon  and accessory upgrades, either you got the cash or you got the items to upgrade, or you don’t… there are not enough items to upgrade more than  1 weapon or accessory per character at this point.  I am trying to keep weapon levels equal to or greater than chapter #, but so far not quite there yet (got a couple to level 7, everyone else is at ~4, and 1 item up to level 6.  no more….)  not sure why I would want to switch to a new weapon that starts at level 1 instead of my nice shiny level 6 or 7 weapon? especially when I don’t have enough components to upgrade that new fandangled piece of iron… maybe they will be useful after chapter 11 where I hear items and CP and Gil are flying around like you won the lottery… we shall see… I might not even play it that far…

biggest complaint: LINEAR LINEAR LINEAR!!! Maybe it’s because I’ve played a pretty darn good number of MMO’s, or maybe because I find The Elder Scrolls to be the best RPG’s ever?  But not having the ability to run around the game world is lame lame lame…  ”supposedly” you can at some point, but I have a friend playing who is either in chapter 11 or chapter 12 and he still cannot… out of 13 (?) chapters that is just plain horridribble…

****************2 itty bitty early game spoiler alert*****************

The Characters… first and foremost I have to say (not what you are thinking) that why in the world do we have a brawler punching machines?  I mean I do love the Brawler class/character in every FF they have shown up, but seriously (yes I know this is not a first in the FF series) and to make them the most physically powerful class, against machines!!  and of course we have the classic FF “someone at some point is/was/becomes and enemy before/after being a good guy” plot device, and the “dying love interest” which I firmly believe comes back later on in the game, as too many people were pissed about Tifa…

We also again get stuck with “the stupid girl” that annoys the crap out of us… this time with a horrible austrailian accent that ONLY occurs at the end of the sentence.  As if that was not enough, she flails her hands out to the sides when she runs, like a southern belle…  it gets better too… not to mention she gives off this really weird vibe, I keep thinking she is the new (totally retarded and gay (not the traditional meaning, I am referring to non-normal/not quite right/just plain stupid, as the definition of the word) instead of super duper cool) Sephiroth of the FF series.

On top of that you get the equally retarded Hope character, the snivelling, whiney, annoying kind of character you want to get a good dish of whoop ass… and then he changes because someone told him he was wrong.  seriously? If you thought Steve Jobs killed your mother, would you forgive him because someone told you it was an exploding iPad that did it, and just because he is in charge of the company doesn’t mean he is responsible for anything it did, go kill the the chinese manufacturer instead?   I didn’t think so.

right, so we cannot forget the 1 non-asian, non-caucasian character that is in the game, just like most of the other FF games.  completely stereo typed (I am not an expert on these, but…) as a vietnam vet (IMO), but not a really messed up one.  I also want to know who is responsible for making characters in video games that are standing still… “dance” in place, I don’t stand like that, I bet you don’t stand like that either, in fact except for a couple of Schizophrenia/ADHD/Parasomnia patients or those affected by Parkinson’s Disease, I don’t think too many people know or do rock/dance while standing, and most of the people with the problems I listed only do it while sitting…  right last issue here… um the choco-chick, in the hair? really?

believe it or not, I have no other character complaints!!!

GO CID!!!

Plot, Story, overall characters = not that exciting, no emotional attachment yet, I’m not rooting for them to win, not “dying” to find out what happens next…  Kinda like FF X.

ok, enough of this for now… I’ll revisit later and update with links.

Ok, so first, sorry I have not posted in a while.  First I was out of the continental united states for a couple of weeks in December, then had some pet problems in early January, followed up with breaking the crap out of my leg January 16th. I cracked my Tibia clean through about 3 inches above my ankle and then the tibia split up the bone about 6 inches, followed by cracking my fibula clean through just above the split in my tibia.  I have a lovely 8″ metal plate in my leg with 15 screws now.  so I do actually have a couple of good reasons for not posting.  I just started feeling somewhat better, I got my appetite back this past Saturday and my pain is mostly manageable even though I rarely find a comfortable position to sit/lay. in

Happier news…

Sprint is finally getting an Android phone with the new 1GHz SnapDragon processor by Qualcomm (extra cool it is capable of going up to 1.5 GHz if I remember correctly). The HTC Super-sonic. Hopefully late March, early April!! finally! I’ve been waiting since October…

Next up, back to my lovely PC, most everything seems to be working just fine now, I am running with the default BIOS settings and it works at least; however the PC sits on the BIOS POST image for almost 2 minutes before it actually starts POSTing.  Not sure what to do about that, I think I need to wait for the next BIOS update to fix that, but for now… it works.

So, I used a bootable CD with Paragon Defrag on it to Defrag my Windows 7 boot HDD and then used the Fedora 12 KDE x64 Live CD to install Fedora on the HDD by shrinking my Win7 partition by 100Gigs and then installed Fedora on it.

Now, the next time I booted into Windows 7 I got a message that my copy of Windows was not Genuine.  Not sure what’s up with that, but I haven’t done anything about it, and I have not gotten the message again.

Now back to Fedora… I added the proprietary drivers for my Motherboard’s ATI Radeon 3300HD in an attempt to try to use wine to play Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) and a couple of other things, mostly some older games…  after rebooting, I no longer get a GUI, just a blank black screen and about 8 lines down a blinking cursor.  I can type, I can hit enter, but it does not respond.  This has been going on since January 5th or so.  Today I found out that Fedora has Virtual terminals just like FreeBSD, so very cool, I can at least get to a prompt today.  Now I cannot find any assistance online for configuring the ATI drivers so I can get them to work.  I know that a couple of versions ago they changed the command to configure the drivers, but I can’t find any helpful, current, information for this.  I am lucky I found the aticonfig command again.  I think I can figure it out from here though.  It just bugs me that the only info I could find said not to use the drivers, then if you go to Wine‘s website they tell you if you don’t use the proprietary drivers that you can expect your games not to run well.  What a pain. (not as big of a pain as my leg though)  after searching for “aticonfig linux” I found some more info…

Will try and update again this week on how things are going, I am also working on my taxes so who knows… right now I am doing it on TurboTax.com but I think I will try a couple of others before I submit, even though I have used Turbo Tax for 15 years or so.
